This course is specifically for those supporting learning in further or adult education settings and is designed to improve the quality and success of learners by invigorating the partnership between teachers and learning support assistants (LSAs). Learners need to be working in a support learning role in the lifelong learning sector. Employers will be required to provide a mentor for course members. Learners will have their own tutor for personalised support.
Content
This practical course features a blended learning approach consisting of workshops, online activities and individual tutorials. It consists of four mandatory units and one optional unit.
Mandatory Units:
- Preparing to support learning
- Learning support in the Lifelong Learning Context
- Learning support principles
- Approaches to learning
One optional unit from:
- Equality and Diversity
- Managing behaviour in the learning environment
- Supporting learners in a subject or vocational area

Supporting the learning of 14-19 year olds.
Duration
This course will run for two hours a week over 19 weeks. The next course commences September 2012.
Assessment
There are no examinations. Learning is assessed by means of a reflective Learning Journal and includes personal account, written assignments and observations in the work setting. Successful candidates will receive a City and Guilds Certificate in Learning Support.
Progression
Future career paths could include the HigherLlevel Teaching Assistant role (HLTA), Foundation Degree in Learning Support or teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector through PTLLS and/or DTLLS.
