Foundation Studies is a programme of experiential, experimental and integrated learning. It is designed to ensure that a full range of learning opportunities is provided which is necessary to help students be aware of the demands of art and design. The programme recognises the importance of independent thinking, organisation and motivation, leading to an informed choice of progression opportunities.
Entry Requirements
Students who enter with at least one of the following qualifications, and are 18 years of age, are likely to benefit most from the programme: One A2 Level pass with three GCSEs grade A-C; a combination of a vocational A Level Single Award and AS Level supported by appropriate accredited achievement; a portfolio of work giving evidence of achievement to a certain standard. In some cases a student may have a qualification in Fine Art or a named design pathway, Advanced GNVQ in Art and Design. Mature applicants may be considered without formal qualifications depending on portfolio and experience. A successful interview and satisfactory reference are required for all applicants.
International Entry Requirements:
English Language Level IELTS 5.5 or an equivalent Certificate. High School Leaving Certificate at C grade and above or a vocational A Level in Art and Design. Mature students may be able to enter without formal qualifications. Satisfactory Reference. Portfolio of work plus telephone interview if required.

Content
The course is unit based with an emphasis on integration. There are nine units in three stages. The final stage carries a pass, merit or distinction grade, which is subject to external moderation. The first two stages carry a pass threshold for the purpose of internal benchmarking of student progress.
There is assignment and project based work, studio and workshop practice, exhibition and museum visits, commercial/industry related visits, resource based study, and progression towards student directed and independent learning. Tutorial support is provided throughout the programme.
Progression
There are around 180 different art and design disciplines available for further study within the higher education sector, including graphic design, packaging, multimedia, film and video, film and animation, fine art painting/sculpture/media, interior design, architecture, media and cultural studies, etc.
Additional Information
While some materials and equipment are provided, you will be expected to pay for most of your own equipment and materials, much of which is available from the College Shop.
There are also costs involved in visits and trips to galleries and museums, and the opportunity to travel abroad on a College trip.
