This six week Textile Printing course offers a valuable opportunity to learn the basic principles of silkscreen printing.
You will be encouraged to work within sketchbooks on weekly tasks; these will be set as independent study to support and consolidate the learning that has taken place within each session. Links will also be made to textile designers to help enhance your overall knowledge and understanding of the subject.
Content
Week 1: Breaking down the pattern
Dissecting pattern for printed textile design from secondary sources. Students will need to bring inspirational images; paper, brushes and Indian ink will be availalable to buy.
Week 2: How to create a Koda-TraceTurning the pattern into a design for silkscreen printing using either Adobe Photoshop or by using more traditional methods.
Using the pattern designs created in the previous week's session, we will be scanning the designs into Adobe Photoshop to create a koda-trace.
Week 3: Exposing, cleaning a silk screen, test printing your design
A demonstration of how to coat and expose a design for silkscreen printing, ready for printing.
Week 4: Silkscreen printing methods and fabric dyeing with reactive dyes
Using your screens we will print using the following methods:
- Silkscreen Printing with Opaque Binder
- Silkscreen Printing with Puff Binder
Dyeing natural fibres using reactive dyes for the following week.
Week 5: Silkscreen printing methods
- Silkscreen printing with foil adhesive
- Discharge printing with the fabrics dyed in the previous week's session.
Week 6: Planning and printing a T-shirt
Students will bring a plain T-shirt for printing, using some of the techniques learned throughout the duration of the course.
In the final session there will be a group critique where we will reflect on the work produced over the six weeks. Presentation skills will also be introducted.
Some materials will be provided, others can be purchased from the College Art Shop.
Duration
This is a six week course running on a Tuesday evening (maybe subject to change), 6pm-9pm, subject to sufficient numbers (minimum of 16). The next start date will be in the Autumn Term 2012, exact date to be confirmed.
