Introduction to Life Drawing

This six week Life Drawing course offers a valuable opportunity to learn the basic structures needed to draw the human form.  Working from the figure you will develop a range of drawing skills using different media and techniques to build up an exciting body of work.  You will be encouraged to work within sketchbooks on weekly tasks; these will be set as independent study to support and consolidate the learning that has taken place within each session.  Links will also be made to artists to help enhance your overall knowledge and understanding of how the techniques learnt can be applied.

Content

Week 1: Proportion and Scale - you will identify the proportions of the figure through a series of studies in pencil.

Week 2: Composition and Negative Space - you will complete close-up studies of the figure using negative space to create the sense of form.  You will use charcoal to create a series of subtractive drawings.

Week 3: Line, Gesture and Movement - you will explore balance and movement through a series of quick observational studies in ink.

Week 4: Tone - you will use charcoal to explore the sense of form when drawing the figure.

Week 5: Mixed Media - you will use wax and ink resist techniques on close-up studies of the figure.

Week 6: Pastels and Reflective Colour - you will use soft pastels and appropriate pastel papers to support the study of colour when drawing the figure.

In the final session, there will be a group critique where we will reflect on the work produced over the six weeks.  Presentation skills will also be introduced.
