Video Production - College Certificate

This six week Home Video Production course is designed to help students get the best out of their home-video camera and post-production video editing system.  The course looks at the process of filming, managing footage and improving the editing process, helping to make it more creative and dynamic.  Students will gain a range of filming techniques designed to challenge and improve their video recording.  This will include looking at camera movement, shot types and in-camera technology as well as recording the best sound and using lighting.

The course will then look at the post-production process including digitising and how best to manage your material and files.  What are the best ways to edit a sequence, how you use the editing timeline, how to sync sound and use transitions and special effects including key framing and super-imposing.

Content

Week 1: Introduction to using the camera, shot types, framing, looking at different cameras and formatting including HD.  Lessons will focus on using DV tape format.

Week 2: Filming an action sequence, camera movement, focusing on a range of different techniques including tracking and using dollies etc.

Week 3: Gain sound skills and developing a practical understaning of 'coverage' through a practical single camera drama task.  Explore lighting techniques, three point lighting, manual camera settings, white balance, exposure etc.

Week 4: Focus on 'in-camera' effects, super-imposing and green-screen.  Introduction to video editing, logging, EDLs and digitising.  Understanding the timeline and the interface focusing on the software Final Cut, but also looking at Adobe Premiere.

Week 5: Video and sound editing, structuring the timeline, applying transitions, adding audio, animation, pictures and text etc.

Week 6: Adding effects, completing the timeline, colour grading, exporting your film for different mediums.  Different file formats.

Duration

This is a six week course running on a Tuesday evening (may be subject to change), 6pm-9pm, subject to sufficient numbers (minimum of 16). The next start date will be in the Autumn Term 2012, exact date to be confirmed.
