Entry Requirements
NVQ Level 2 qualifications or equivalent, preferably with some experience as a stylist, successful interview and satisfactory reference. Good IT skills are essential as is access to a computer and the internet from home.
Duration
One to two years depending on ability - one day a week at College and a minimum of three days per week employment in a hairdressing salon. Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for 30 hours per week in addition to their time in College; there is flexibility so please discuss individual circumstances at interview.
Content
To gain the full Advanced Level qualification you are expected to complete four mandatory units and five units from the available optional units below:
Mandatory units:
Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
Promote additional services or products
Provide hairdressing consultation services
Monitor procedure to safely control work operations
Option 1:
Colour hair using a variety of techniques
Provide colour correction
Creatively dress long hair
Creatively style and dress hair
Create a variety of perm effects
Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
Option 2:
Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
Support client services improvement
Progression
On successful completion of this course, students may progress on to become a specialist hairstylist at home and abroad, educator for manufacturers, assessor or lecturer, specialist within the industry, NVQ Level 4, Technical Salon Manager.

A programme of assessment is carried out during practical sessions, supplemented with online testing. Evidence will be shown in the form of an e-portfolio. Owning an iPod would be an advantage but is not essential.
