BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business Studies

This is a two year course in business and is the equivalent of two A levels.  It is designed so that, by the end of year 1, you will have achieved a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business, which is the equivalent of one A level. Activities include visits and case studies relating to real life businesses; students have previously visited Thorpe Park, London Zoo and Madam Tussauds.  Future trips planned include Arsenal Football Stadium and the Coca-Cola plant in Edmonton.  Guest speakers are invited in to talk to students..

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grades A*-C; GCSEs in English and Maths are required, one of which must be achieved at a minimum grade C and the other at a minimum grade D; or a BTEC First Diploma in Business at Merit level plus GCSEs in English and Maths, one of which must be achieved at a minimum grade C and the other a minimum grade D (progressing students only). Plus satisfactory reference from last school or college.International Entry requirements: High School leaving certificate plus IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

Content

This is a two A-level equivalent course and you will develop practical skills and theoretical understanding of the world of business.  You will complete projects investigating topics such as marketing, financial analysis, website design and retail strategies, for example.  By the time you have completed the course you will have a good knowledge of the wide world of business and a practical skill set that will prepare you for the next stage in your business career.

During the course you will develop your group work, IT and presentation skills. The units you will study include elements of accounting, marketing, human resource management and website design. You will have a personal tutor who supports and guides you through the course. You will meet with your personal tutor for group meetings and for personal 1-2-1 meetings on a regular basis.

You will have opportunities to visit real businesses and to find out how they work as well as meeting business people and university tutors who may be looking for potential employees or potential university undergraduates like you!

Coursework

The course is 100% coursework and you will be assessed in a variety of ways; presentations, role plays and time-limited exercises.

Progression

Progression on to Year 2 of the course is dependent on successfully achieving the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Year 1. This course is all about preparing you for a business and/or entry to university.  On average, to enter university you will need a merit grade profile on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business.  Future careers for you include accounting, banking, insurance, human resources, marketing and sales.  In addition, we will prepare you for starting your own business or perhaps an e-business.

Additional Information

We will give you enrichment opportunities including visits and practical hands-on, work-related experiences. You may also have the opportunity to develop your financial skills further by studying the Certificate in Financial Studies in Year 1 and progressing onto a Diploma in Financial Studies in Year 2.
