An alternative route to University or Higher Education for students aged 19+. This award provides access to and experience for Degree studies in all the Sciences, and is for students with a keen interest in the study of science and a high level of commitment. One year's part-time study provides students with an intensive introduction to the ideas, scientific terminology and mathematical and laboratory skills associated with each area of study. Progression to further study at Degree level is encouraged and is the normal expectation for students obtaining this award.
Entry Requirements
This intensive course requires a maturity of approach and a high level of commitment. Some background in science and a good level of English is required. In addition, applicants need a satisfactory reference, successful interview and screening. Applicants should have sufficient time to devote to their studies.
Duration
Three days a week over one year (September start). 18 hours per week inclusive of a one-hour tutorial. Students are expected to undertake 16 hours per week of unguided private study.
Content
The units listed below are indicative of the course content:
Biology - Introduction to major themes of biology such as cells, biochemistry, energy, nutrition, homeostasis, transport, inheritance and laboratory skills.
Chemistry - Introduction to matter (atoms, ions and molecules), organic chemistry, equilibrium and enthalpy, measuring and explaining reaction rates, amount of substance (moles).
Physics - Application of health physics, concepts of health physics, medical imaging, electricity and nuclear physics, oscillations and waves, circuit electricity.
To obtain a pass in this Access course, a student will have to achieve a minimum of 45 credits at level 3 and further 15 credits at level 2 or at level 3. Total credits required - 60 for the Diploma.

There is a wide variety of Degrees that are accessible including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Pharmaceutical Science, Forensic Science, Biomedical, Biochemistry, Geology, Radiography, Veterinary Medicine, Petroleum and many others.Additional information
Most universities require a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 and many require some to be achieved at Merit or Distinction.
