BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a practical, work-related course.  The course will develop the skills needed to start a career in a related area of work.  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on real workplace situations, activities and demands. A Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels which means that when you have completed the course you can choose to get a job or progress into higher education.

 
Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade C or above to include English Language, Mathematics, Science and Additional Science; or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science at Merit/Distinction and three GCSEs at Grade C to include English Language and Mathematics.


Content

 The course is made up of 18 units - 5.5 compulsory core units and 12.5 specialised units.

Core Units include:

  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Scientific Investigation
  • Scientific Practica
  • Techniques
  • Perceptions of Science
  • Using Mathematical Tools in Science (0.5)

Specialised Units may include:

  • Statistics for Science Technicians (0.5)
  • Chemistry for Technicians
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques
  • Energy Changes, Sources and Applications
  • Electrical Circuits and their Industrial Applications
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Medical Physics Techniques
  • Chemical Laboratory Techniques
  • Electronics for Science Technicians
  • Biomedical Science Techniques
  • Industrial Applications of Organic Chemistry.

Duration

Two years full time.

Coursework

 All units are internally assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.  A grading scale of Pass, Merit and Distinction is applied to all units.  A maximum of 360 UCAS points can be achieved.

Progression 

BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education establishments (Universities and Colleges). It provides progression to higher education vocational qualifications such as BTEC Higher National Diploma in Applied Sciences or a full-time Degree in Applied Sciences or Forensic Science. This qualification programme provides access to more specialist units and therefore broadens and deepens the learner's experience in preparation for the world of work. The Degree courses that you could apply for at the end of this course are Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Clinical Science, Life Science, Medicine, Pharmaceutical Science, or Pathology. Alternatively, you could work in a quality control laboratory in an industrial manufacturing laboratory, hospital laboratory, materials testing laboratory, materials testing laboratory in the construction, paper or plastic industry, laboratory in a school, college or university or an environmental science laboratory.
