The achievements of the ESOL Horizons students from General Education, and the Adult ESOL students from Business and Professional Studies, were celebrated in a ceremony attended by their tutors, Kingston Mayor Chrissie Hitchcock, Kingston College Chair of Governors, Dr John Farmer, and their family and friends.
The ESOL students improve their reading, speaking, listening and writing skills in English through group work, discussion and a variety of teaching methods and activities. In addition, the ESOL courses offer an opportunity for young and adult migrants to settle in the local community, develop as a person and learn about the culture of the country.
Kingston College chairman of governors, Dr John Farmer, handed out certificates for each student. Some learners were awarded special prizes for their outstanding contribution and outstanding effort which were handed out by the Mayor. Lucky Ahmed, 18 years old, said: “I could not believe it when my name was called. I was very surprised and happy to be chosen by my teachers”.
Sarah Penneck, ESOL Horizons tutor, said: “Lucky has done very well, has passed his ESOL exams and has played a key College role as a Faculty Representative.”
Caroline Streliaev-Pivetta, ESOL Horizons Co-ordinator, congratulated all students for their hard work and thanked the teaching team for their motivation, hard work and commitment.
Nicola Bamford, Head of Adult ESOL, paid thanks to all guests for attending the event and for supporting the students and thanked learners for making traditional dishes from their own countries which were enjoyed by everyone at the celebration buffet.
Also present at the ceremony were Jo Monk, Dean of the Business and Professional Studies Faculty and Steve Bennett, Dean of General Education Faculty.
