Law Students go to Parliament

21 December 2011

Students on the ILEX Law Level 3 and 6 courses attended an organised tour of the House of Commons and Lords last week.

Ilex students at Parliament
Description: Ilex students at Parliament

The purpose of the trip was to find out what happens in Parliament and for students to see how their MPs represent them and Parliament checks on the work of Government.

Students saw the focal points of the building including the House of Commons and Lords debating chambers, the Queen’s Robing Room and historic Westminster Hall.  Along with the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the students were guided through the role of the Crown and its integral part of the institution of Parliament.

Course Lecturer Clare McGloin said of the experience: “Our ILEX Level 3 law students are currently studying for an exam on the English Legal system so going to see the place where the laws of the UK are made was really insightful and to see the buildings was awe inspiring. Our guide was really good at explaining how Parliament is responsible for approving new laws (legislation). He also explained the purpose of debate in both Houses, in which Members discuss government policy, proposed legislation and current issues. “
