Over 500 students, staff and visitors were able to buy delicious Brazilian food and handcrafted goods such as paintings, traditional Brazilian jewellery and t-shirts, all made and sourced by the students. Visitors also enjoyed capoeira (Brazilian martial art) performances and were able to participate in Portuguese language mini taster sessions.
The students have so far raised £1,040 and a thrilled Course Tutor, Caroline Streliaev-Pivetta, commented: “The students have gained so much from planning and organising this event, so thank you to everyone for showing your support! This money will make a genuine difference to young people and the teachers helped by the Aprender charity.”
Lubna Elmaarfi, one of the students said: “We are very pleased with the end result after so much hard work. We have put a lot of effort into making this event successful and we are over the moon to be able to help poor schoolchildren in Brazil and also raise people’s awareness of such a great country like Brazil. I have learned so much by doing this project and I hope I can visit Brazil one day!”
Two lucky raffle winners were presented with two Olympics tickets and an official Brazilian football shirt.
The Aprender- Learning Together charity aims to “impact a nation, school by school, so that young people have the chance to move out of poverty for themselves, who are empowered to transform their own lives, their communities and their country. Our method of intervention is about equipping people on the ground, quickly developing them so that they can, in turn, train others - a truly sustainable model”.
