Creative Youth set a live brief for Kingston College first year BTEC Level 3 Art & Design students as part of their work experience to celebrate the heritage and Saxon foundations of the original Kingston Bridge and the Medieval Undercroft, now home to Creative Youth's FUSEBOX. Bridging photography, graphic design and fine art, the students designed works for an exhibition celebrating the unique story of Kingston - from its Saxon origins to the present day - taking inspiration from its riverside position and the Saxon bridge-foundations to create an imaginative installation. Along a constructed river, students worked collaboratively to create models of bridges.
On Thursday 20 April at FUSEBOX, the intricate, thoughtful and unique creations from Kingston College and Kingston University creative industries students' were displayed at the Heritage Forward exhibition. Special thanks to the Creative Youth team for giving us this opportunity and to Archie O’Neill for all the direction and guidance!
Art & Design student, Josie Granger said: “Before this project, I had only ever done small scale things with clay so this was quite different. I found it rewarding and challenging. My idea was to do the original Saxon bridge. I tried to look up old photos but mostly found sketches, so worked with those. It was really exciting seeing my bridge in another space and on display, I really enjoyed the experience.”
Hannah Hall, Art & Design, also commented: “The project was outside my comfort zone as it was 3D but it was interesting and challenging. It was nice to see the different ideas from the other students at FUSEBOX”.
First year, Music Technology student, Bruno Sikora, who provided a live DJ set on the night, added: “I felt really confident for the event as we had put in the preparation and worked with Archie to get the desired effect. I found it extremely enjoyable and would happily work for Creative Youth again.”
