Stunning student work at annual competition

Kingston College’s School of Hair and Beauty was once again proud to host their annual student Competition, X-travaganza and this year there were two themes: Level 1 Hair and Beauty students presented their interpretation of “Screen Goddess” and Level 3 Hairdressing and Level 2 Beauty students presented their interpretation of “Nature Essence”.

The students provided a truly stunning parade of highly innovative and creative work, all of which was brilliantly diverse, and which was enthusiastically received by the audience.

Victor Pajak, from award winning salon Headquarters in Kingston, was a judge alongside International Bridal hair specialist, Severin Hubert and other industry specialist, Roz Edwards from the Hepburn Collection. Beauty judges were Lizzie Collins from crystal body art specialists Vajazzle as well as several former tutors who were warmly welcomed back to the College. All the judges agreed that choosing winners was an incredibly difficult decision as the overall standard of work was exceptionally high.

Victor Pajak remarked: “It’s an honour to be involved again this year. The industry graduates are evolving from year to year and I am very excited to see what this year’s students will provide. The competition is a showcase for our new hairdressing talent which needs the support of salons and colleges.”

Charlotte Ramsey, who is studying on a Level 3 hairdressing course said: “I am very excited about the competition, it’s been a lot of work so far and I still have a lot to do but it’s all worth it. I want to work in bridal hair and this has shown me that I’d like to work in competitions as well.”

Lecturer and event coordinator, Kirsty Brown, commented: “The industry experts on the night could not believe the high quality of the work produced. The experts who attended last year said this year Kingston College Hair and Beauty on 3 raised the bar higher. Congratulations to all our students for working so hard!”

Kingston Aviation Festival

Student designs logo for Kingston Aviation Centenary celebrations, 2 to 5 June 2012

The Hawker Association is a body of dedicated engineers, designers and aero enthusiasts who keep alive the Heritage of Aviation in Kingston (1912-1992). David Hassard and Bill Downey from the association approached Kingston College in January 2012 and asked for students to be involved in the design of a logo and web design for the Kingston Aviation Centenary celebrations in June 2012.

Graphic Design students embraced the request and presented their ideas to David, Bill and Fiona (marketing advisor, Luxton Marketing) on 7 February. They chose the winning design which was executed by Harry Pocock, and runners up were George Farrell and Dan Smith. The final design was chosen because it was finished to a high standard and effectively met the brief; it had captured both the design and engineering aspect of aviation and the geographic of Kingston upon Thames including the bridge and river. Due to restricted time the final artwork was produced by the client but Harry's initial design and layout was not altered.

On 2 June Harry, George and Dan have been invited to attend the VIP Reception for the opening of Kingston’s Cultural Programme 2012. Nicola Hillard who led the project at Kingston College, will also attend.
Harry Pocock said: “I was thrilled that I won, I really enjoyed working on a live brief and with real clients; we did not have very long to come up with our ideas, but that made it even more exciting.” You can see Harry’s concept applied to the Kingston Aviation website here: http://www.kingstonaviation.org/

George Farrell said: “It was a great experience to be designing for such an important event, none of us had any idea of the history of aviation in Kingston, until this project.”

Nicky Hillard, Lecturer, who lead the project at Kingston said: “All our students embraced this project from the start. Bill Downey and David Hassard from The Hawker Association were thrilled by our students’ enthusiasm and interest in the project. We were limited by time but the students rose to the challenge, producing some highly creative and imaginative concepts. Our clients stated that they were “knocked out by the quality and standard of the work”.”

Student Achieves the Queen's Scout Award

Jacqui Clements, a first year student studying for the Foundation Degree in working with children with special educational needs, received a Royal Certificate from the Queen at a special ceremony at Windsor Castle. She was the only person in the borough of Kingston to have gained the award this year.

In order to achieve the Queen Scout Award you must have gained your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and have been part of the Scouting family for two years. The Queen Scout then has a further two challenges to complete.

Jacqui says: “For my Queen Scout I helped as a Christian youth support worker in a local church for a year. In addition to this I was also part of a team of leaders who took a group of Scouts to Sweden last year. This was an amazing trip as I was at times a first aider for 50 people or more. I also helped in three different cub groups across the borough.”

Jacqui also discovered a love for mountaineering as she climbed Kilimanjaro for her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. She adds: “I have done a lot to achieve this award. It has changed my whole life. I never knew what I wanted to do with my life but knew I wanted to have fun. I quit my retail job back in 2008 so I could get a job which had more free time. This led me to special needs and I have never looked back. It is due to this award that I am now studying to become a special needs teacher.”

Jo Dallal, Head of Section - HE and Counselling, says: “Jacqui is a really committed student. She studies hard and takes her work seriously. She is fully engaged with the course and is able to link her learning to the work which she does at the special school in which she is employed. It is a pleasure to have her on the course and I am sure that she will do well in the future.”

Students on the ESOL Horizons Entry Level 3 course recently organised a Brazilian Fair to raise money for school children living in poverty in Brazil, where the 2016 Olympic Games will be held.

Over 500 students, staff and visitors were able to buy delicious Brazilian food and handcrafted goods such as paintings, traditional Brazilian jewellery and t-shirts, all made and sourced by the students. Visitors also enjoyed capoeira (Brazilian martial art) performances and were able to participate in Portuguese language mini taster sessions.

The students have so far raised £1,040 and a thrilled Course Tutor, Caroline Streliaev-Pivetta, commented: “The students have gained so much from planning and organising this event, so thank you to everyone for showing your support! This money will make a genuine difference to young people and the teachers helped by the Aprender charity.”

Lubna Elmaarfi, one of the students said: “We are very pleased with the end result after so much hard work. We have put a lot of effort into making this event successful and we are over the moon to be able to help poor schoolchildren in Brazil and also raise people’s awareness of such a great country like Brazil. I have learned so much by doing this project and I hope I can visit Brazil one day!”
Two lucky raffle winners were presented with two Olympics tickets and an official Brazilian football shirt.

The Aprender- Learning Together charity aims to “impact a nation, school by school, so that young people have the chance to move out of poverty for themselves, who are empowered to transform their own lives, their communities and their country. Our method of intervention is about equipping people on the ground, quickly developing them so that they can, in turn, train others - a truly sustainable model”.
For more information about the event and the Aprender charity, visit the website designed by ESOL Horizons student, Felipe Alexandre www.wix.com/ipe_aleiphone/esole3_olympics2012/web-pages#! or visit www.aprenderuk.com.
